If you’ve walked Bourbon Street, you’ve seen it: a tall, bright red drink in a curvy glass. The Hurricane is one of New Orleans’ most famous cocktails, and it’s the inspiration behind our Hurricane mix.
Where the Hurricane came from
The Hurricane is usually traced to Pat O’Brien’s bar in the French Quarter in the 1940s. The story goes that during World War II, whiskey was hard to get. To buy it, bars had to take a lot of rum along with it. The bar needed a way to use up all that rum, so it mixed the rum with fruit juice into a sweet, fruity drink.
It was served in a tall glass shaped like a hurricane lamp, and that’s where the name comes from. Decades later, it’s still a must-order in New Orleans, especially during Mardi Gras.
What’s in a classic Hurricane?
Recipes vary from bar to bar, but a classic Hurricane is usually built from:
- Rum, often a mix of light and dark
- Passion fruit, the signature flavor
- Citrus, like orange and lime
- A splash of grenadine, for sweetness and that deep red color
The result is sweet, tart and tropical, and it goes down a little too easily.
A Hurricane at home, no bartender needed
Our Hurricane mix is made with real fruit juice and no alcohol, so you decide what goes in it:
- Pour a bottle of Daiquiri Joe Hurricane into the mixing bag.
- Fill the empty bottle with dark rum and add it, or skip it for a mocktail.
- Fill the bottle with water twice, add it to the bag and shake well.
- Freeze overnight, then pour.
One bottle makes 8 drinks. For the full New Orleans look, serve it in a hurricane glass with an orange slice and a cherry.
The Hurricane, hold the rum
All the flavor of the French Quarter with none of the hangover. Leave out the rum and it makes a great mocktail for game day, a family crawfish boil, or anyone skipping alcohol. Laissez les bons temps rouler.
